Woody Island Nature Reserve

Woody Island Nature Reserve is a unique destination located in the Recherche Archipelago, a chain of over 100 islands stretching 230 kilometers from Esperance to the Great Australian Bight. Unlike many other islands in the archipelago, Woody Island is distinguished by its stands of tall trees, including acacias, orchids, and five species of eucalypts. In spring, the island's wildflowers bloom, offering a vibrant display of native flora.

Visitors can engage in various activities such as bushwalking, snorkeling, swimming, and fishing. The island features three marked walking trails: the Skinny Dip Bay Walk (1.5 km return), Twiggy's Landing and Shearwater Lookout Walk (1 km return), and the Island Top Walk Trail (2.1 km loop). These trails provide opportunities to explore the island's diverse landscapes and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding archipelago.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the island's predator-free environment, which allows for close encounters with curious birds and reptiles. The Shearwater Bay snorkel trail offers a chance to observe diverse marine life in sheltered waters. Fishing is permitted from the main jetty, providing additional recreational options.

For those wishing to extend their stay, Woody Island is the only island in the Recherche Archipelago with visitor facilities, including self-contained cabins and camping areas. The island also boasts a visitor center with stunning ocean views, a bar, and a small but tasty menu, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoyment.

Access to Woody Island is typically via boat from Esperance. Visitors are encouraged to plan their trip in advance and be aware of safety information related to bushwalking, swimming, fishing, snorkeling, and diving. It's advisable to consider traveling with a personal location beacon (PLB) for safety during outdoor activities.
