West Mount Barren, known as Queelup in Noongar language, is a prominent quartzite peak located at the western end of the Barrens Range in Fitzgerald River National Park. The summit offers sweeping views of the park and the Southern Ocean, encompassing landmarks such as Gordon Inlet, Trigelow Beach, Point Ann, and the distant outlines of Mid Mount Barren and Thumb Peak. On clear days, the Stirling Range, over 100 km to the west, is also visible. The area is rich in unique flora, including species like Barrens regelia (Regelia velutina) and Barrens clawflower (Calothamnus validus), which are endemic to the park. Visitors can embark on a walk to the ridgeline or summit, with the journey taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours return. The path traverses diverse plant communities, providing opportunities for nature enthusiasts to observe the park's unique vegetation. It's important to note that pets are not permitted in the park due to ongoing 1080 baiting programs aimed at controlling feral predators. Additionally, visitors should exercise caution near cliffs and be aware of potential risks associated with coastal environments.
