Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden

Lavender Bay, Sydney, NSW

Lavender St, Lavender Bay NSW 2060

Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden is a reclaimed rail-side land turned into a magical public oasis in Lavender Bay. After the death of her husband, artist Brett Whiteley, Wendy transformed the overgrown site into a layered garden filled with native and exotic plants, sculptures, and winding paths. Today, the garden is free to visit, maintained by gardeners and volunteers, and beloved by locals and visitors alike. It offers unique views of Lavender Bay, the Harbour Bridge, and Opera House. The ashes of Brett and their daughter Arkie were also scattered here, making it a place of both beauty and memory.

Transport & Access:
The garden is best reached by public transport. From the city, take a train to Milsons Point or North Sydney Station and walk 10–15 minutes downhill towards Lavender Bay. Ferries to Milsons Point Wharf also provide a scenic option. For drivers, street parking in Lavender Bay and North Sydney is limited, with tight spaces and time restrictions — weekdays are especially difficult. There are no dedicated parking facilities on-site, so visitors are encouraged to use trains or ferries when possible.

Accessibility:
Paths are steep and uneven, with many steps, so the garden is not well-suited for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. There is no lighting at night; visits are recommended only during daylight hours.
