Gordon River Road, Central Highlands TAS 7140

Welcome River State Reserve is a remote wilderness park located in Tasmania's Central Highlands, approximately 100 kilometers west of Hobart. The reserve is accessible via the Gordon River Road, which runs along its southern boundary. This area is renowned for its pristine temperate rainforests, featuring towering Eucalyptus regnans (giant ash) trees that can reach heights of over 85 meters. The dense rainforest is interspersed with blanket bog peat soils and isolated buttongrass moorlands, creating a unique and diverse ecosystem.
The reserve is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, recognized for its outstanding natural values. It serves as a habitat for various threatened species, including the grey goshawk, Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle, and spotted-tailed quoll. The remoteness and inaccessibility of the area have helped preserve its pristine condition, making it one of the few remaining temperate rainforests surviving in Australia.
Visitors to the reserve can enjoy the Twisted Sister Track, a short loop that leads to a notable giant ash tree known as Twisted Sister. This track offers a glimpse into the area's natural beauty and is suitable for those interested in experiencing the rainforest up close. However, it's important to note that the reserve is remote, with limited facilities and no designated parking areas. Visitors should be prepared for a lack of amenities and ensure they have appropriate equipment and supplies for a wilderness experience.
For those interested in fishing, the Florentine River, which runs through the reserve, is known for its trout fishing opportunities. However, visitors should consult the Inland Fisheries Service for information on fishing regulations and licensing requirements.
Please be aware that the reserve is in an isolated area with no mobile phone coverage. It's advisable to inform a trusted contact of your plans before visiting. Additionally, the area is a Fuel Stove Only Zone, and open fires are prohibited to protect the environment. Visitors should adhere to all guidelines and regulations to ensure the preservation of this unique wilderness area.
