Waychinicup National Park, located approximately 65 km east of Albany in Western Australia's Great Southern region, is renowned for its stunning inlet, diverse coastal heath, and distinctive granite rock formations. The park's name derives from two Nyoongar Aboriginal words: 'Waitch' meaning emu and 'up' meaning place of, translating to 'place of the emu'. While emus are rare, visitors may encounter quendas (bandicoots) and, with luck, quokkas navigating through the dense vegetation.

The park boasts a rich diversity of coastal wildflowers, with unique plant species found on its granite slopes. In spring, the area is awash with vibrant blooms, making it a haven for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Birdwatchers can also delight in spotting various species, including threatened ones like scrub birds, western whistlebirds, and whipbirds, which thrive in the park's dense vegetation.

For those interested in camping, the Waychinicup Inlet Camping Area offers a secluded experience. The campground is equipped with a long-drop sealed vault toilet and picnic facilities. However, there is no fresh water supplied, so visitors should bring their own. Campfires and solid fuel appliances, including stoves, barbecues, and heaters, are prohibited at all times. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and camping fees apply. As the area is remote, it's advisable to inform someone of your plans and expected return time.

Access to the park is via a rough gravel road off Cheyne Beach Road. The road is suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles but can become flooded; during such conditions, access is only suitable for four-wheel drives. Visitors should exercise caution, as the road is narrow in places and features speed humps for water drainage along the last section towards the campground.

Please note that dogs and other pets are not permitted in the park. Entry to Waychinicup National Park is free, but camping fees apply. For more information or inquiries, contact the Albany Parks and Wildlife Office at +61 (0)8 9842 4500 or via email.
