Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park

Umbrawarra Rd, Pine Creek NT 0847, Australia

Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park protects a picturesque chasm carved through red sandstone, located about 115 km south of Darwin (and 22 km from Pine Creek). A clear creek flows through the gorge, forming pandanus-lined pools and sandy banks that are perfect for a refreshing dip in the Dry Season when water levels are low. The towering gorge walls, glowing orange in the sunlight, narrow to only a few meters apart in sections, creating a dramatic backdrop for bushwalkers. A walking trail leads along the creek into the gorge for about 1 km, after which more adventurous hikers can continue by wading, rock-hopping and swimming to explore further reaches. Along the way are small sandy beaches where visitors often pause to picnic or swim. The park has a modest campground near the car park (pit toilet provided, no showers or drinking water) set in woodland with plenty of birdlife. In the Wet Season the creek can flood and the gorge may be inaccessible. Umbrawarra is also significant to the Wagiman Aboriginal people, and some rock art can be found on the gorge walls if one looks carefully. With far fewer tourists than larger parks, Umbrawarra offers a serene wilderness experience – it’s common to share the gorge with only a handful of others or even have it to oneself on weekdays. The combination of striking scenery, a bit of adventure, and the chance to cool off in natural rock pools makes Umbrawarra Gorge a hidden gem for those exploring off the main highway.
