The Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area, located just 4 km from Launceston's city center, is a 440-hectare reserve that offers a variety of recreational activities amidst diverse natural landscapes. The South Esk River winds through the area, providing picturesque views and opportunities for water-based activities such as swimming, canoeing, and water skiing during the summer months. The reserve features over 35 km of tracks and trails, including 8 km of purpose-built mountain bike tracks developed in partnership with the Launceston Mountain Bike Club, catering to both beginners and experienced riders. Horse riding is permitted on designated fire trails, and the area includes a fenced, grass dressage arena and an extensive cross-country jumps circuit managed by a local riding club. The reserve is also home to a range of native wildlife, including the eastern bettong, long-nosed potoroo, and common wombat. Visitors can enjoy walking tracks that lead to the historic Duck Reach power station and the Cataract Gorge Reserve. The reserve provides picnic tables, shelters, toilets, and barbecues at three main visitor nodes: Apex Hut/Aquatic Point, Trevallyn Dam Picnic Area, and the Hoo Hoo Hut, making it a popular spot for families and social groups. Dogs are permitted in some areas of the reserve, with a mix of on- and off-lead zones; dog zone maps are available on signs within the reserve. The Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area is managed by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and shares boundaries with the Cataract Gorge Reserve, managed by the Launceston City Council. Gates close at sunset, and visitors are advised to avoid driving in the reserve at night due to native wildlife activity.
