Trephina Gorge Nature Park
Ross, East MacDonnell, NT
Trephina Gorge Rd, Ross NT 0870, Australia

Trephina Gorge Nature Park is a favorite local escape about 85 km east of Alice Springs. It features a picturesque, accessible gorge in the East MacDonnell Ranges where Trephina Creek – usually dry or with small pools – has carved a classic outback scene. The gorge’s defining characteristics are its broad, sandy creek bed lined with stately river red gums and bounded by vertical red quartzite cliffs that glow in the sunlight. A hallmark of Trephina is its large ghost gum (a short stroll from the campground), often touted as one of the biggest in the country, standing alone in the sandy creekbed with its white trunk striking against the red rock backdrop:contentReference[oaicite:147]{index=147}. The park caters to walkers with several excellent trails: a 2 km Gorge Walk follows the creek into the gorge’s narrow section, and a 4.5 km Rim Walk climbs to the top of the range, providing sweeping views over the gorge and surrounding MacDonnell Range country:contentReference[oaicite:148]{index=148}. A longer 8 km trail connects to nearby John Hayes Rockhole (a smaller water-filled gorge in the park). Wildlife like euros, rock wallabies, and numerous birds (think spinifex pigeons, babblers, whistling kites) can be spotted. The main campground at Trephina Bluff has plenty of shade, picnic tables, fire pits and pit toilets (and is caravan-accessible, though unsealed road); another smaller one at John Hayes is for 4WD campers. Waking up to cool dawn air in Trephina, with the morning light hitting the gorge walls and white bark of ghost gums, is a quintessential Central Australia experience. The park is also significant to the Eastern Arrernte people, with Trephina part of caterpillar Dreaming tracks that weave through the region. With its natural beauty, well-marked hikes, and rustic amenities, Trephina Gorge offers a perfect introduction to the East Macs – often quieter but equally as beautiful as their western counterparts – and is ideal for an overnight camp or day trip from Alice Springs.
