Tree Point Conservation Area
Tree Point, Darwin, NT
via Gunn Point Rd, Glyde Point NT 0822, Australia

Tree Point Conservation Area is a hidden coastal reserve located on a peninsula about 40 km north-east of Darwin. Centered around a small sand spit and adjacent tidal creek, Tree Point offers a quiet beach backed by casuarina trees and extensive mangrove flats. There are no facilities or developed tracks – access is by high-clearance vehicle via Gunn Point Road and then a rough 4WD track. The reserve is frequented by locals for shore fishing and seasonal collecting of shellfish (with respect to bag limits and Indigenous traditional use). Birdwatchers also visit for the diversity of coastal and mangrove birds; species like beach stone-curlews, ospreys and mangrove honeyeaters can be observed. At low tide, the exposed sand and mud flats extend far out, revealing soldier crabs scuttling across the flats and wading birds foraging. Visitors should be self-sufficient: there is no fresh water, and the area is isolated. Being croc-aware is essential if wading or fishing near the water’s edge. Tree Point’s allure is its solitude and natural coastal beauty, providing a glimpse of an undeveloped Top End beach ecosystem. The reserve helps protect fragile dune vegetation and mangrove communities and is best enjoyed by those seeking a remote beach experience not far from Darwin.
