The Shot Tower, constructed in 1870 by Joseph Moir, is a 58-meter-high sandstone structure located in Taroona, Tasmania. It stands as one of the tallest buildings in the state and is among the few remaining circular shot towers worldwide. Visitors can ascend the 259-step circular staircase to the top, where they are rewarded with scenic views over the River Derwent, Hobart, and beyond. The wooden steps were designed to be gentle for workers carrying heavy sacks of lead in the past. At the base of the tower, a museum provides insights into the fascinating process of lead shot production. The Shot Tower is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, with the Tower Tearoom & Garden Courtyard dining area open from 10 am to 4 pm, except on Wednesdays. Entry is free, and facilities include picnic tables, a BBQ area, and parking. For more information, contact the Shot Tower at 0427 770 422.
