Strzelecki National Park, located in the south-western corner of Flinders Island in Bass Strait, is renowned for its striking granite peaks, pristine beaches, and diverse flora and fauna. The park's centerpiece, Mount Strzelecki, stands as the highest point on the island, offering hikers panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding archipelago. The Strzelecki Peaks walk is a challenging 5.6 km return track that ascends through ferns, she-oak stands, and wildflower heath to the summit at 756 meters. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, the Trousers Point walk is a 2 km circuit that showcases unique rock formations and provides access to two beautiful beaches. The Trousers Point campground, situated at the southern end of Trousers Point, offers basic facilities including a toilet, rainwater tank, picnic tables, and open areas for tents. The sheltered beach is ideal for swimming and snorkeling, with clear waters and white sands. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including wombats, Bennetts wallabies, echidnas, and pademelons. Birdwatchers can spot species such as the Cape Barren Goose, swift parrot, forty-spotted pardalote, grey-tailed tattler, and the hooded plover. The park also holds cultural significance, with Aboriginal midden sites at Trousers Point listed on the Register for Cultural Significance. Access to the park is via the C806 road from Whitemark, approximately 16 km south. A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania's national parks. Visitors are advised to check the weather before planning walks and to dress accordingly, as conditions can be cold and windy at the summit. Mobile phone coverage is limited, with Telstra being the only network available on the island. Public telephones are available at Whitemark, Lady Barron, Killiecrankie, and the Whitemark Airport.
