South Arm, Hobart, TAS
South Arm, Tasmania

The South Arm Nature Recreation Area is a marine conservation area located within Ralphs Bay, near the suburb of South Arm in Tasmania's Bruny bioregion. This reserve encompasses extensive tidal sand flats that support a rich intertidal ecosystem, including shallow sediments, microalgae, and a variety of invertebrates. It serves as a crucial habitat for shorebirds such as sandpipers, pied oystercatchers, and red-capped plovers. Notably, the area is of high conservation significance for migratory shorebirds like the eastern curlew, which is listed as endangered under state legislation. The expansive tidal flats are recognized as a Tasmanian geoconservation site, known as Ralphs Bay Tidal Flat. Fishing is permitted in the area; however, specific regulations apply, and visitors should consult the Recreation Sea Fishing Guide for detailed information. The reserve is accessible via the South Arm Road, approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Hobart's city center. While the area offers natural beauty and opportunities for bird watching and fishing, it does not provide facilities such as picnic tables, barbecues, or parking. Visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly and adhere to all local guidelines to preserve the area's natural values.
