The Richmond Gaol Historic Site, located in the historic town of Richmond, Tasmania, is one of the best-preserved convict structures in Australia. Constructed between 1825 and 1840 using convict labor, the site offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the convict past of Tasmania. The gaol features original stone buildings, including prisoners' cells, a cookhouse, holding rooms, and flogging yards. A solitary confinement cell provides insight into the harsh conditions faced by inmates. Self-guided tours are available daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. The site is approximately a 20-minute drive from Hobart, making it an accessible destination for those interested in Tasmania's convict history.
