The Peggs Beach Conservation Area is a tranquil coastal reserve located approximately 11 km east of Stanley, Tasmania. This serene spot is ideal for camping, fishing, and wildlife observation. The area features two campgrounds: Peggs Beach and Black River. Peggs Beach campground offers flushing toilets and is open from November to April, while Black River campground, open year-round, provides non-flushing toilets. Both campgrounds are unpowered, and visitors are advised to bring their own drinking water, firewood, and fire pot. Campfires are permitted in designated fireplaces, except during seasonal fire bans. The reserve is dog-friendly, allowing dogs on leads, and horse riding is permitted below the high-tide mark. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy both beach and estuary fishing, with boat launching facilities available. Wildlife watchers can observe a variety of species, including white-bellied sea eagles, wedge-tailed eagles, and various bush birds. The area also holds cultural significance, with evidence of Aboriginal middens and a rich history of the Pegg family grazing stock in the region. Access to the reserve is via the Bass Highway, with the Peggs Beach turn-off about 11 km east of Stanley. Please note that camping fees apply, and bookings are not taken; campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, visit the Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania website.
