Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve, located near Wyndham in Western Australia's Kimberley region, is a vital wetland sanctuary renowned for its rich biodiversity and significance to migratory birds. The reserve is listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and is recognized on the Register of the National Estate.
During the wet season, the area transforms into a lush landscape as creeks flood the flat, low-lying plains, creating a haven for waterbirds. A specially designed boardwalk and wildlife hide offer excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography, with species such as egrets, spoonbills, herons, brolgas, and magpie geese frequently observed. The dry season reveals billabongs and lagoons that provide year-round food sources for fish-eating birds of prey, including pelicans and jabirus.
For panoramic views of the reserve, visitors can hike up to the ruins of Telegraph Hill, the site of a former wireless station built in 1914. The 800-meter walk offers a 360-degree perspective of the surrounding area, including parts of the Ord River floodplain and Parry's Creek. Along the trail, information signs detail the area's history and natural features.
Safety precautions are essential when visiting, as both estuarine and freshwater crocodiles inhabit the area. Visitors are advised to stay well back from the water's edge and adhere to all warning signs. It's recommended to travel with a personal location beacon (PLB) for safety.
The reserve is jointly managed by the Parks and Wildlife Service, the Miriuwung Gajerrong Aboriginal Corporation, and the Yoorrooyang Dawang Regional Park Council, acknowledging the traditional owners of the land.
