Oolloo Crossing Conservation Reserve protects a tranquil stretch of the Daly River, one of the NT’s major rivers, at a natural crossing point used historically by vehicles (though now closed to through traffic). The reserve’s highlight is the Daly River itself – here the river runs broad and shallow over rock bars, fed by upriver springs that keep the water clear and flowing even in the Dry Season. Tall paperbark trees and pandanus fringe the banks, providing shade and habitat for kingfishers, pygmy geese and other waterbirds. Visitors (access via a rough track) often come for the excellent fishing: barramundi, sooty grunter and freshwater prawns are sought by anglers casting from the banks or small boats. A low-key bush camping area is available near the crossing, with no facilities except fire pits (visitors must be self-sufficient and carry out all rubbish). With little development around, nights are dark and filled with the sounds of the bush. Aside from fishing, activities include birdwatching and simply relaxing by the flowing river – the waters are incredibly inviting, but swimming is not recommended due to crocodile presence. Oolloo Crossing Reserve sees far fewer visitors than more accessible parks, making it a peaceful getaway for those prepared for a 4WD adventure. It preserves a slice of the Daly River’s natural environment, allowing people to enjoy and respect the river in an unspoilt state.
