Nitmiluk National Park (Nitmiluk means "cicada place" in Jawoyn) is home to the majestic Katherine Gorge, one of the Northern Territory’s most famous natural wonders. The gorge system comprises thirteen separate gorges carved by the Katherine River through ancient sandstone over millennia. Sheer cliffs, up to 70 m high, tower above calm river water, creating a series of dramatic vistas. Visitors can experience the first few gorges by boat cruises led by Jawoyn guides who share Dreaming stories and point out rock art on the gorge walls. For the adventurous, renting a canoe is a popular option – paddling through the gorge at your own pace, you can swim at sandy beaches between gorges and even camp overnight on designated sites. Several excellent walking trails start near the Nitmiluk Centre (which has exhibits, café and campground): a short 1-km trek to Baruwei Lookout gives a panoramic view of the first gorge, while longer hikes (4–12 km) lead to beautiful spots like Southern Rockhole (a seasonal waterfall and swimming hole) or up to Jawoyn Valley to see rock paintings:contentReference[oaicite:106]{index=106}. More challenging is the multi-day 62 km Jatbula Trail, which traverses the park westward to Leliyn (Edith Falls) passing waterfalls and wetlands. Edith Falls, at the park’s western end (also accessible by a separate entrance), is another highlight – a cascading waterfall and large natural pool perfect for swimming and picnics. Wildlife in Nitmiluk includes wallabies, fruit bats, and freshwater crocodiles (generally harmless) – rangers ensure the main tourist waters are clear of the larger saltwater crocs. The park is jointly managed by the Jawoyn people and NT Parks; their culture is evident and respected throughout. With its mix of awe-inspiring scenery, recreational opportunities, and cultural depth, Nitmiluk is a must-see destination in the Top End.
