Mount Montgomery State Reserve
Montgomery, Ulverstone, TAS
Montgomery Road, Montgomery TAS 7315

Mount Montgomery State Reserve, located near Ulverstone in Tasmania's Dial Range, is renowned for its challenging 5 km return hike that ascends approximately 330 meters to the summit at 471 meters elevation. The track meanders through dry eucalypt woodlands, following Myrtle Creek, which features varying water levels and small waterfalls. Along the way, hikers can observe diverse vegetation, including various orchids, fungi, and wildlife. The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views over the towns of Ulverstone and Penguin, as well as the broader coastline. The track is classified as Grade 3, indicating that some bushwalking experience is recommended due to short steep sections, rough surfaces, and numerous steps. It's important to note that sections of this track are shared with mountain bikes, so visitors should be mindful of other users. The trailhead is accessible via Montgomery Road, approximately a 15-minute drive west from Ulverstone along the A1 Bass Highway. Parking is available at the trailhead. Visitors are advised to avoid driving in the reserve at night to protect native wildlife. The closest public facilities, including toilets, are a 5-minute drive away in the town of Penguin. Dogs, horses, and motorbikes are not permitted within the reserve. As of February 2025, planning has commenced for constructing five new sections of walking track to create a loop, allowing visitors to walk from Mount Montgomery to Mount Dial. This development aims to provide a safer walking experience and promote the scenic values of the Dial Range.
