Budj Bim National Park, Macarthur, VIC 3286
This park is now officially known as Budj Bim National Park. It is a key part of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage property. The park is centered on the dormant volcano of Budj Bim, whose past eruptions created a unique, rocky landscape. A crater lake, Lake Surprise, is a highlight of the park. The area is of immense cultural importance to the Gunditjmara people, who engineered one of the world's oldest and most extensive aquaculture systems in the surrounding lava flows to farm eels. Visitors can explore the volcanic features via a network of walking tracks. A picnic area with tables, toilets and gas barbecues is available. As a national park, dogs are not permitted. Entry is free.
