Montebello Islands Conservation and Marine Park
Dampier, Karratha, WA
Dampier WA 6713

The Montebello Islands Conservation and Marine Park, located approximately 120 kilometers west of Dampier in Western Australia, comprises 265 low-lying islands and islets. These islands are renowned for their pristine coral reefs, diverse marine life, and a rich history of atomic testing. The surrounding waters are home to over 450 fish species, more than 1,000 invertebrates, and various marine mammals, including turtles, dolphins, and dugongs. Visitors can engage in activities such as snorkeling, diving, fishing, and kayaking, with numerous dive sites and snorkeling locations available. The park also holds historical significance due to British atomic weapons tests conducted in the 1950s, leaving behind concrete bunkers and monitoring stations on some islands. Visitors are advised to limit their visits to Alpha and Trimouille Islands to no more than one hour per day and to avoid disturbing the soil or removing relics. Camping is permitted on certain islands, but facilities are nonexistent, so visitors must be self-sufficient. Pets and fires are not permitted on the islands. Entry to the park is free, and visitors are encouraged to plan their trips carefully, ensuring they have appropriate equipment and supplies.
