Mitchell River National Park, located approximately 500 km northwest of Kununurra in Western Australia's Kimberley region, is renowned for its lush fan palms, dramatic gorges, and the iconic Mitchell Falls. The park is accessible only by high-clearance 4WD vehicles, requiring a journey along rugged tracks that may have washouts and corrugations. Visitors should be fully self-sufficient, as the area has few facilities. Limited supplies are available at Drysdale Station, but not on the plateau itself. The park is closed during the wet season, and access roads and tracks to the plateau are usually closed during this time.

The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including up to 50 mammal species, 220 bird species, and 86 kinds of reptiles and amphibians. Saltwater crocodiles are present in the area, so visitors should exercise caution and adhere to all safety guidelines. Swimming is not permitted below the falls due to the possible presence of saltwater crocodiles.

An Uunguu Visitor Pass is required for entry to the park and must be purchased online before arrival, as there is no public internet or phone access on Wunambal Gaambera Country. Camping fees apply at the Mitchell Falls Campground, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground offers separate generator and non-generator areas near Mertens Creek. Some campsites have their own fire ring, and firewood must be collected before entering the park. It is recommended to use portable gas or fuel stoves. Toilets are available at the campground.

The park offers several walking trails, including the Punamii-unpuu (Mitchell Falls) walk trail, a moderate to difficult 8.6 km round trip that takes 4-6 hours to complete. This trail passes Little Mertens Falls and Big Mertens Falls, leading to the Mitchell Falls. Parts of the trail involve uneven ground, water crossings, and scrambling over rocks. Visitors can also opt for scenic flights to these attractions from the campground. Helicopter services are provided under license by HeliSpirit, and bookings are essential.

Visitors should plan their visit carefully, consider traveling with a personal location beacon (PLB), and be aware of the presence of crocodiles in the area. For more information, including safety guidelines and to purchase the Uunguu Visitor Pass, visit the Wunambal Gaambera website.
