Manton Dam Recreation Area
Manton, Darwin, NT
Manton Dam Rd, Manton NT 0822, Australia

Manton Dam was Darwin’s first reliable water reservoir, constructed in 1942. Today, the dam and its surrounding area have been repurposed as a recreation reserve. The long lake, ringed by eucalypt and monsoon forest, is a popular spot for water activities – high-powered boating and water skiing are permitted in one zone, while another area is designated for fishing and paddling (no swimming, as estuarine crocodiles can sometimes enter the dam). Anglers pursue barramundi and saratoga which have been stocked in the reservoir. Several picnic sites with tables, BBQ pits, shelters and toilets are provided under shady trees near the water’s edge. A short nature walk along the dam wall and through the adjacent forest offers views of the lake and opportunities to spot local wildlife (numerous birds, goannas, and agile wallabies). Historical remnants, such as old pump station infrastructure, can still be seen as reminders of the dam’s wartime heritage. The reserve is accessible via a sealed road about 70 km south of Darwin, just off the Stuart Highway. It’s especially busy on weekends with families and water-sports enthusiasts. Manton Dam Recreation Area, with its calm waters and natural backdrop, provides a refreshing escape for a picnic or day of outdoor fun. Note: Boat ramps are available; safety regulations (speed limits, lifejackets) apply for water craft, and a permit is required for power boating.
