Lyons Cottage Historic Site is a single-storey weatherboard home located beneath The Nut in Stanley, Tasmania. Built before 1870, it was the childhood home of Joseph Aloysius Lyons, who was born here in 1879. Known as 'Honest Joe,' Lyons became Tasmania's first and only elected Prime Minister, serving from 1932 until his death in 1939. The cottage has been restored to reflect its original appearance, offering visitors a glimpse into the modest beginnings of one of Australia's most popular political figures. Inside, memorabilia from Lyons's childhood and insights into his political journey are displayed, providing a personal connection to Tasmania's history. The site is open daily from 11 am to 3 pm, except during winter months (June, July, and August). Entry fees are $4.00 for adults; children enter free. The cottage is located at 14 Alexander Terrace, Stanley, approximately 2.5 hours' drive from Launceston and 4.5 hours from Hobart. To reach Stanley, follow the Bass Highway (A2) from Launceston, then take Main Road (B21) into the town center, which becomes Wharf Road (B21) and leads to Alexander Terrace. Please note that the site does not offer picnic tables, BBQ facilities, playgrounds, shade, parking, or dog-off-leash areas.
