The Low Head Historic Site, located at the mouth of the kanamaluka/River Tamar, is a significant maritime precinct in Tasmania. Established in 1833, the Low Head Light Station is Australia's third-oldest lighthouse, operating continuously for over 170 years. Adjacent to the lighthouse, the Low Head Pilot Station comprises distinctive red and white convict-built cottages, offering a glimpse into Tasmania's convict past. The Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum, managed by the Low Head Pilot Station Support Group Inc., is situated in the historic Pilot's Row and showcases a collection of artifacts reflecting the era of sail and steam vessels. The museum is open daily and offers tours for visitors. For those wishing to stay in the area, the Low Head Historic Precinct offers newly renovated self-contained cottages, including the keeper's cottage, schoolhouse, and pilot's cottage. The Coxswain's Cottage Café, overlooking the beach and the River Tamar, is open daily, providing a relaxing setting for meals and refreshments. The site is accessible via the East Tamar Highway (A8) from Launceston to George Town, then approximately 6 km north along Low Head Road. Parking is available at the site. Please note that dogs are not permitted in the area. For more information, visit the Parks & Wildlife Service Tasmania website.
