Lake Sambell
Beechworth, High Country, VIC
2-20 Mcdonagh Rd, Beechworth, VIC 3747
Lake Sambell is a beautiful example of industrial land rehabilitation. Originally the site of the Rocky Mountain Mining Company's open-cut gold mine, it was flooded in the 1920s to create a recreational lake for the town. Today, it's a popular spot with a sandy beach area for swimming, a fishing pontoon, and a 3.5km walking track that circuits the lake. The reserve has excellent facilities, including a playground, picnic and barbecue areas, and a nearby caravan park. It's a key part of the Beechworth Historic Park. A designated area is available for dogs to be exercised off-leash. Entry is free.
