Hanging Rock Reserve

Woodend, Macedon Ranges, VIC

139 S Rock Rd, Woodend, VIC 3442

Hanging Rock is a rare volcanic feature known as a mamelon, formed six million years ago. It is a place of great cultural significance to local Aboriginal communities and has an aura of mystery, famously captured in Joan Lindsay's novel. A network of walking tracks allows visitors to explore the rock's many strange formations and crevices, culminating in a climb to the summit for breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. The reserve at the base of the rock has expansive lawns, picnic and barbecue facilities, a cafe, and an interpretive centre. A vehicle entry fee is charged to enter the reserve. To protect the native wildlife, dogs are not permitted to leave the picnic areas and are not allowed on the rock itself.
