Douglas River / Daly River Esplanade Conservation Areas
Douglas-Daly, Daly Region, NT
Oolloo Rd and Tjuwaliyn Rd, Douglas-Daly NT, Australia

The Douglas and Daly River Esplanade areas protect various stretches of two significant rivers that converge in the Top End’s pastoral country. Along the Douglas River (also known by its Aboriginal name Dengalli), visitors will find the renowned Douglas Hot Springs – a series of thermal pools and sandy creeks where hot spring water mingles with cooler river water, allowing for a relaxing soak. The surrounding area is dotted with siliceous rock formations and terraces created by mineral deposits. Camping is permitted near the springs at a bush campground (with basic toilets) under shady trees. Downstream, the Douglas River flows into the Daly River: at Oolloo Crossing and other access points, anglers take advantage of prime barramundi fishing. The Daly’s riverbanks also harbor small reserves protecting rainforest pockets and riparian habitat. These esplanade conservation areas have minimal development; a few have picnic tables or boat ramps, but most are simply natural riverfronts. 4WD is recommended to reach many spots, especially in the Wet Season when tracks become boggy. Wildlife is abundant – expect wallabies in the evenings and a variety of birds from kingfishers by the water to red-tailed black cockatoos in the woodlands. Crocodiles inhabit the Daly River, so only swim at the Douglas hot spring pools (which are shallow and warm). The Douglas-Daly reserves provide a rustic outback river experience, blending recreation like fishing, camping and soaking in springs with the conservation of unique geological and ecological features.
