Dial Range Reserves
Penguin, Penguin, TAS
Dial Road, Penguin TAS 7316

The Dial Range Reserves, located near Penguin in Tasmania's northwest, offer a diverse array of walking tracks through various forest types and geological formations. The range includes multiple peaks, with Mount Gnomon providing a unique profile to the northern section. Visitors can explore rugged landscapes featuring volcanic, dolerite, conglomerate, and sandstone layers, along with historical mining tunnels from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The area is rich in vegetation, with stringybark and black peppermint forests on drier slopes, and tall swamp gums and blackwood trees in damper areas. In spring, the understorey and heath plants bloom, adding to the area's beauty. The walking tracks wind around hillsides, through gullies, and ascend the coastal mountains, offering experiences suitable for various skill levels. Notable walks include the Mount Gnomon Lookout, Mount Dial, Mount Duncan Track, and Mount Montgomery, each providing unique views and experiences. The reserves are accessible via Dial Road, with parking facilities available. While dogs are not permitted off-leash, the area is free to enter, making it an accessible destination for nature enthusiasts. Recent infrastructure projects aim to enhance visitor experiences, including the construction of a loop walking track connecting Mount Dial and Mount Gnomon, and an all-access boardwalk at Ferndene State Reserve.
