Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park protects a rare example of a tropical limestone cave system, located about 30 km south of Katherine. Hidden beneath the savanna woodlands is a labyrinth of caverns and passages that have been formed over millions of years. The cave name comes from the local Jawoyn phrase for “many stars”, referring to an Aboriginal legend that the caves are where stars rest during the day. Visitors can enter the caves only on guided tours (generally operated hourly during peak season) which descend into the main chamber about 15 meters underground. Inside, the temperature and humidity are high (up to ~30 °C and 90% humidity), creating a unique ecosystem. Spectacular limestone formations decorate the cave – stalactites hang from the ceiling, meeting stalagmites growing from the floor, and flowstones drape the walls. Delicate crystal features can be seen glistening under torchlight. The caves are also home to wildlife adapted to the dark: the rare Ghost Bat (Australia’s only carnivorous bat) roosts here, as does the harmless brown tree snake which can sometimes be spotted coiled on cave ledges. The surrounding park has a small visitor center, picnic facilities and a short nature walk through karst country where rock outcrops and sinkholes are visible:contentReference[oaicite:86]{index=86}. Cutta Cutta cave tours provide insight into the geology and biology of these tropical caves – a striking contrast to the sun-baked landscape above. Note that during the Wet Season, tours may be suspended if the caves flood or for safety. There is an entry fee for the guided tour, but it is a highlight for many traveling through the Katherine region.
